Furikake Onigiri - Wholegrain Rice Balls

Furikake Onigiri - Wholegrain Rice Balls - Clearspring

I’ve always loved Clearspring Products, so when they released their Furikake - Japanese seasoning sprinkle - I HAD to try it in brown rice balls, aka Omusubi rice balls. Delicious!!

Furikake is a mix of toasted sesame seeds, shiso leaf and sea vegetables. It makes the quickest, easiest seasoning - I’ve been using it on everything recently.

Serves: 2 (4 rice balls) - Cooking time: 40 mins - Prep Time: 15 mins

Ingredients

For the Rice

For the Miso Filling

For the Toppings

Method

  1. Cook the rice according to packet instructions. Allow it to cool slightly then gently sprinkle and fold in the furikake sprinkle.
  2. Stir together miso, ginger and sesame oil to a paste.
  3. Mix grated carrot and salt and squeeze to wilt, pouring away any excess liquid.
  4. Cut the nori sheet into 4 even rectangular strips.
  5. Divide the rice into 4.
  6. With clean hands moistened with water, shape each rice part into a triangle or slightly flattened ball shape.
  7. Poke a indentation into the middle of each ball, fill it with the miso mixture then close the hole with rice.
  8. Wrap each ball in a nori strip and top with carrot and sprinkle more Furikake.
  9. Enjoy it straight away, take it away for lunch or picnic.
