The term coconut is derived from 16th century Portuguese word ‘coco’, meaning ‘head’ due to the three indentations on the dried coconut shell that resemble facial features. Found throughout the tropics and subtropics, the coconut is known for its great versatility and is part of the daily diets of many people. Virtually every part of the coconut palm can be used in some way, in fact in the Philippines they call the coconut the ‘Tree of Life’ while in the Malay language it is called the ‘Tree of a thousand uses!’
The coconut provides oil for cooking and frying, dairy-free milk and cream, as well as chips and flour for a wide range of uses. The water or juice in the middle of the coconut is consumed as a refreshing drink while the husk is used in ropes, mats, sacks and compost (especially for orchids). Not only does coconut have nourishing and culinary benefits it is also used by the beauty industry in haircare products, moisturisers and body butters because it is readily absorbed in the skin.
