Why Organic Matters
Good food starts with healthy soil. How we grow our food matters, not only for what ends up on our plates, but for the soil, wildlife and wider environment it comes from. That’s where organic comes in. Organic is about more than what goes into your food. It considers how ingredients are grown and produced in the first place, following clear standards designed to work more closely with nature.
Organic farmers use fewer pesticides, with only a limited range permitted under organic standards. Greater emphasis is placed on prevention and natural ways of managing pests, helping support insects, pollinators and other wildlife.
Organic standards strictly limit the additives and processing aids that can be used in food. Hydrogenated fats and certain artificial colours, sweeteners and preservatives are not permitted, while organic fruit and vegetables cannot be washed in chlorine.
GM ingredients are not permitted under organic standards. Organic farming instead takes a whole-system approach, working with soil health, biodiversity and natural farming methods.
Healthy organic soils can hold more water, helping farms cope better with drought and heavy rainfall. Greater biodiversity and more diverse farming systems can also help build resilience when conditions change.
Research has found differences between some organically and conventionally grown foods. Some organic crops have been found to contain higher levels of certain antioxidants, alongside lower levels of pesticide residues.
For us, organic isn’t a trend. It has been part of Clearspring since the beginning.
Since 1993, we have believed that good food starts with good ingredients, grown and made with care. Organic has therefore always been central to what we do, alongside our commitment to authentic foods, traditional producers and a more sustainable way of eating.
Organic farming works with nature to protect healthy soils, support biodiversity and give wildlife more space to thrive.
Organic farmers use natural methods such as crop rotation and composting to help build and maintain healthy, fertile soil, rather than relying on manufactured nitrogen fertilisers.
Organic is a protected legal term, with strict standards covering how food is grown, produced, processed and labelled. Organic businesses are independently certified and inspected from farm to finished product.
Choosing organic helps create demand for farming methods that put soil health, biodiversity and the wider environment first. It also helps support the farmers and producers keeping these practices thriving for the future.
Every September, the Soil Association puts organic in the spotlight with Organic September. This year’s message is simple: “Organic is a shortcut to better.”
And choosing organic doesn’t have to mean changing everything at once.
You could swap something you already buy for an organic alternative, discover a new ingredient, or simply add a little more organic food to your weekly shop.
Each choice helps support farmers and producers working to protect healthy soils, encourage biodiversity and grow food with care.
So this Organic September, why not start with one simple swap?
