Made In Hackney and Clearspring join forces to provide 30,000 free plant-based meals - Clearspring

We are very proud to introduce you to Made In Hackney - our official charity partner for our 30 year anniversary.

Made In Hackney is a vegan community cookery school and charity working across London and the UK inspiring communities to grow, cook and eat more plants. They deliver life changing cookery and food growing classes to community groups most in need and provide emergency food support to households in crisis.

Clearspring has supported the work of Made In Hackney since 2013 – when Maria went to meet the team in their then tiny basement kitchen in Hackney – and realised there were so many synergies and a shared passion for nutritious, healthy plant-based food for all.

Clearspring started donating products to their community cookery classes and masterclasses – their ticketed offer in specialist vegan food themes where all the funds raised goes back into their charity work. Before vegan was ‘trendy’ this amazing cookery school was offering vegan nut cheese, fermentation, wholefood vegan meatz classes and a myriad of international cuisines – including Japanese of course – before anyone else and we were proud to support their work.

In 2020 they launched the UK’s first COVID19 emergency food response programme – delivering free nutritious plant-based meals direct to the doors of 500 vulnerable people in Hackney within days of the lockdown starting.

They have continued this community meal service ever since – today supporting 200 people a week in crisis with a week’s supply of nutritious meals, many made using donated Clearspring products. They often point out what an outrage it is that in the fifth richest city in the world thousands of people go hungry every day – and we could not agree more.

Their cookery classes are about providing skills and long-term community resilience for people to be able to nourish themselves on challenging budgets – but the community meal service is about supporting people in immediate times of crisis – both absolutely critical.

We are proud to join forces with them in 2023, as part of our 30-year anniversary, to provide 30,000 free nourishing plant-based meals to communities in need – because, like what MIH often say, Clearspring believes having access to enough nutritious food is a human right not a privilege.
