Clearspring Sesame [1] with Sea Salt [2] (Gomashio [3]) is the first of our retail products to carry the Demeter Logo, and so we are taking this opportunity to talk about what the orange and green symbol actually means.

The Demeter Logo is found on products that have been certified as biodynamic, in accordance with a set of rigorous international production and processing standards. Biodynamic agriculture, which is based on the teachings of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, is founded on a holistic conception of nature, and conceives of the farm as a self-sustaining entity with its own individuality.

Thus no compost, manure or animal feeds from outside farms are permitted. In addition, compost is treated with special herbal preparations, and the landscape managed in accordance with careful consideration of ecological diversity.

The biodynamic approach originated in the 1920s, which makes it the oldest consciously organic [4] form of farming, as well as one of the most sustainable. With biodynamic farming now practiced in over 50 countries nationwide, there is a wealth of evidence showing that healthy soil and contented animals really do lead to the best food and the healthiest people. Long-term investigations conclude that biodynamic farming methods are extremely effective, resulting in better flavoured produce which stays fresher for longer than conventionally-produced foods. In addition to this, nitrate contents are lower in biodynamic food, whilst dry matter contents are higher.

The Demeter Logo provides a guarantee that a product has been produced to the high-quality biodynamic standard, and, as a trademark, is committed to upholding the rights of both consumers and producers of biodynamic produce.
